Society does not have much interest in treating addiction. That is why AA exists. It is the reason for “Dr. Drew”. So far, society has not dedicated resources to deal with the matter. Personally, I do not expect that to change. As a practical matter, that means the individual heals himself. Sad, but true.

If other recovery methods such as: Rational Recovery, Moderation Management, Suboxone, Methadone, Marijuana Maintenance, AA criticizing, or Nile Blaming exhibit successful outcomes and stand the test of time I am certain they will find their way into the mix. I would welcome that! I don’t want anyone to suffer the viscious circle of addiction! The key moment for me was when I realized I needed help and asked for it! Everyone deserves a chance to be free!

Dix345 is being too cynical when he says, “SAT ctrs are excellent profit ctr”. Many have gone out of business in my area of the United States, largely because insurance reimbursement has been cut, or only outpt is covered. Now the ones that survive cater to the affluent, or offer only intensive outpt trtmnt. Problem is I would have died several times over if not for Inpt treatment and surely I am not the only one!

Considering the state most people are in when they “crawl” into the doors of a treatment center I think the families would gladly embrace ALIVE as the positive outcome. That is how it has been for me, I have been to rehab 3 times, halfway houses twice, and I don’t go easy, I was very near death each time. So by teaching the 12 step recovery method, though it is not perfect, it is definitely the lesser of two evils.

It does not really matter whether they ‘work’ or not. SAT centers are an excellent profit center. And, society is not very concerned about drunkards and addicts. Both cause a lot of pain and suffering.

Thanks for this, and all your comments. We often don’t reply because yours are usually posts that stand on their own merits and require no response. Good stuff, which we appreciate. Mike

What I find most disturbing about rehabs is that they do not really work no matter how much they cost as they are mostly live 12 step indoctrinations. For other people who are willing to be responsible they pay for it with higher insurance premium in the US.
I am listening with Expressivo to your website. It is good to know that I am not the only person who has been bewildered a bit when taking in the repercussions of invasive program ideal. I can say I CAN relate completely.

Harmony in CO is a huge 12-step rehab. I believe rehabs should not be allowed to endoctrinate clients for 28 days at their outrages cost. Then send them home telling them AA is their only hope w/o knowing the truth about the clubs in that person’s area. In one area the “bridge the gap” AA member is a con-artist who can’t even read the BB with 20 years. Harmony gives this man your # & all he wants is to prey on your vulnerability thinking you have $ by going to Harmony. Unethical or criminal?

There are only a few non-12-step meetings in my home town, so I always let people know about them. If they want to know where they can find an AA meeting, I just tell them to look at the first page of their phone book (it’s right above “ABC taxi”). There will always be a few people who like AA or NA and they seem to be happy there. But for the rest of us, it’s not right that we have not been made aware of all the options available to us. This lack of public information kills alcoholics.
