“Copping Out”
The article “Copping Out,” by John Cola Pinto talks about the music industry and their involvement with stopping drug use and addiction among musicians. It also describes the formation of a company in 1995 called the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences’ MusiCares substance-abuse program.
Common use of drugs and addiction to them is a large part of the music industry the author explains. He states that major record labels put a small amount of money and time into funds to keep musicians out of drugs and addictions “$2 million over three years to the tiny Musicians’ Assistance Program” (Colapinto 1). The author notes that there are multiple programs and companies that are now trying to have a foot in the door of rehabilitating these musicians that are addicts. He also stresses highly in the investment from record companies in these rehabilitation companies versus taking their own means to do the rehabilitation. The record companies are also publicly denouncing some of these rehabilitation companies publicly, “record companies are not going to be subject to the Mike Greene test” and that they would seek their own treatment options” (Colapinto 1). Mike Greene being the president of the MusiCares substance-abuse program, has taken public denouncing from the record companies for his work on substance abuse an rehabilitation.
The author talks about the use of counselors in the program, Musicians’ Assistance Program, helping many popular musicians. One musician he makes a reference to was “mega-star junkie(s) as Kurt Cobain”(Colapinto 1). With the awareness the author explains, the record companies realize that there is a problem and something needs to be done about it. Speaking in reference to the record companies he says, “Hey, look, we generate all this money. We’re doing something [about drugs]” (Colapinto 1).
