A day in the life of a meth addict can be quite difficult to summarize. Not because there are no right words to use, but because of the many different emotions one goes through, the many activities one does, and so much more. As a once meth addict I will try my best to bring into perspective what life’s like in a day for a meth addict. First of all let me start by saying that meth addiction is one of the hardest obstacles I have had to overcome in my life.
A day for a meth addict begins not at the time in which the meth was consumed but at the time the search for meth began. Every minute spent without meth is like an eternity in a proverbial hell. At the moment you have obtained meth your only goal from there is getting it into your body as quick as possible. Your hands are shaking, your face is sweating and your stomach feel like a knot. That’s just the anticipation most people I have talked to feel prior to consuming the meth.
Once you have consumed the meth weather it be by ingesting it orally, smoking it, or injecting it you immediately feel its effects take hold of your mind and body. The feeling is like an ultimate rush of strength, power, and alertness all mixed together to bring a sense of being able to do anything, and an overall good feeling. It is a feeling that you can never forget and must have constantly. It is this feeling that proves to be most addictive and damaging. Almost everyone I have talked to feels or has felt the same sensations that I described.
After smoking a person can stay awake and active from one, to the most I’ve heard, fifteen days. After being awake for a couple of days your mentality starts to change. You become paranoid, and easily agitated. After a few days up you begin to look sucked up as you lose weight from not eating, as meth causes you to lose your appetite. You begin to hallucinate and think of things in more complex views than usual. You become increasingly distrusting of people and your paranoia causes you to start doing things you wouldn’t normally do.
Depending on how much you have consumed and for how long, you begin to come down. As your high wears off you begin to feel tired and very irritable. You get hungry and your body feels weak. It is very hard for you to concentrate on your surroundings and your own thoughts. At this point you feel like smoking more. Once you have fallen asleep, after a while of tossing and turning, you might sleep for two to three days without waking up once.
After you have gone through this cycle you start all over again. That is where things can get pretty ugly. Smoking meth is addictive and can be very expensive. Allot of the time you must find a way to support your habit. People begin stealing and robbing people. You usually don’t care who you hurt to get money either. Weather it be your friends, family, or people who trust you, you usually don’t care. Meth breaks down the receptors in your brain that give you joy. You tend to be very easily angered and bothered by people. It is not a pretty picture and it is not a situation that should be dealt with lightly. Yes meth is an epidemic and yet it has not been thrown into the spotlight as crack and heroin have. These are just some details of what it is like to be involved with meth as a user and as I have observed in other situations such as mine. If I decided to go into depth about meth I would need to write a book.
